It’s hope that eggs us on. How else could we face life’s ups and downs? Daily,we come face-toface with joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, success and failure, acceptance and rejection, birth and death.Yet,we do try to be cheerful, hoping that something good is going to happen which will make life more meaningful, ushering in happiness and peace. Even though nothing is assured, we go on with life, taking this assurance for granted. We give appointments for tomorrow and we make plans many months ahead. We plan events, make travel plans, fix marriages in advance, give assurance to people that we will meet them on a particular date and generally go about giving assurances. Sometimes we do tend to think: “What if something goes wrong?” When this sudden negative thought occurs, based on assumptions and presumptions, we tend to find ways to insure ourselves against each and everything, including our very life. Ironically, we create a paradox. On the one hand, we confidently give assurances for tomorrow and for many months ahead. On the other hand, we are strongly motivated to take an insurance cover for almost everything including life as if tomorrow is uncertain.
We go on paying high premiums and stay poor so that after we die our heirs can benefit. Our scriptures talk about how to use our body, mind and soul to achieve prosperity, peace, contentment, acceptance, wisdom and eternal bliss. As long as we follow the advice of seers we can never go wrong. They assure us that all of us have a divine soul within, which is immortal. No ‘insurance’can give us this kind of an ‘assurance’.This knowledge assures us and fills us with confidence and faith in ourselves and acts as insurance against fear and disbelief. We should make the effort to contemplate on this awareness. The scriptures very clearly assure us that each one of us as a human being has been blessed with a soul filled with His Divine love and power.
God is Paramatman and he resides in our soul. This knowledge is our insurance in life.We should all have this knowledge first. This true knowledge gives us the assurance that we are blessed. This is the best assurance that we can ever hope for. The Rig Veda assures us:“God is all in all,but only those devotees who completely and in full faith surrender to Him find His helping hand ever ready to guide and protect them.” Faith and devotion are the keys which open the door to total security and divine protection which is why the Rig Veda goes on to say:“His bounteous gift, His Divine wisdom and wealth given to His devotees as spontaneously as ripe fruit drops effortlessly from a loaded branch.” The importance of faith, devotion and surrender are once again emphasised.“A firm faith in God is the only ray of hope that penetrates this gloom of fear and ignorance. The one who has faith and trust in the Lord, invariably ovecomes adverse circumstances and emerges the winner, rich with bounty in the struggle of life.” By understanding and assimilating Vedantic wisdom, we can easily tackle ignorance, overcome doubts and lead a rich, meaningful and wonderful life.■
